EuroREA 5

Autumn 2005, we have published our fifth journal, with support of the EU project liveARCH. It holds among others an article on medieval walls and roofs, linking experimental archaeology and living history in the heritage industry and few articles about the Lofotr Viking Musuem (NO). The Belgian archaeologist Léonce Demarez is remembered and the Algaba de Ronda project in Spain is presented...

Acting out living history should not involve propagating of or flirting with political ideas...

In EXARC’s opinion, acting out living history should not involve propagating of or flirting with political ideas, especially if these ideas refer to National Socialistic philosophy. EXARC is worried about examples like the German living history group Ulfhednar, who are internationally active. There are several groups with an almost similar name, but this is not about them. Already for a long time, Ulfhednar has stood out for their heavy use of symbols, which are else known from the Nazi Era of the 3rd Reich...

Marketing & Communication workshop in Norway

From the beginning, Norway had some suggestions to how to proceed, based on experience from other EU projects. The proposal was to strengthen each partners marketing, and create a marketing strategy for the project. This theme has also much to do with the Scottish theme of the dialogue with visitors. Acquiring information about visitors can be vital for marketing, and strategic communication...

13th EXARC meeting

From 8th to 10th February, 2008, representatives of the archaeological open-air museums in Europe met in the Danish Middelaldercentret, south of Copenhagen for their 13th meeting since 2001. The agenda involved, besides of the introduction of open-air museums that recently joint the association, the discussion of quality standards for this category of museums and the presentation of certification processes already effected in Germany...

First flyer of EXARC

In the beginning of January EXARC developed a flyer and sent it to its members. It contains information about the association, the journal EuroREA and this website. EXARC members can order extra copies. Also over 200 archaeological open-air museums across Europe were contacted asking them to consider membership. Together with the letter a questionnaire was sent to collect data about the museums and their recent development...

3rd generation website

After 4 years, it was decided to prepare a new website. Not only did the graphic design need work: it was felt important to profile EXARC better: some of the content pages were already managed elsewhere and the EXARC website served as a portal. It was decided that the website should first and foremost inform about the association and its members, and on the second place be a starting point...

Quality and Sustainability meeting in Sweden

November 7th - 11th, 2007 Autumn 2007, the 3rd liveARCH meeting took place in Sweden, focussing on the dialogue with visitors as well as on “Quality and Sustainability”: a very ambitious concept which will probably be adjusted during the process. It should cover the partner’s needs, especially towards the quality of the product they offer the public and the way they organise this product including the quality of living history groups and events...

EuroREA 4

2007, EuroREA was transferred from SEA into the hands of EXARC. SEA was still a willing advisor, but EuroREA became the journal of EXARC, where the board had full responsibility, in this case delegated to the editor in chief. In September 2007, EuroREA 4/2007 was published; a bit thinner than in 2006 and progressively popular in content, without losing the high quality in editing and graphic design...

LiveARCH shields are made

For the 8 liveARCH members, shields were made. This is to show they are all connected to the same project and goal, a network of museums with a focus on living history, aiming to disseminate historic knowledge and to promote a greater interest in our common European Cultural heritage among the general public...

12th EXARC meeting

March 16th - 18th, 2007, EXARC met in Pitlochry, Scotland. This was a meeting, hosted by the Scottish Crannog Centre. EXARC members were observers during the 2nd liveARCH conference themed with "the dialogue with visitors". The conference was a great success and included an intensive workshop on interpreting history / archaeology as well as a one day conference with several presentations from various countries about the dialogue with visitors...
