We usually let prehistory start with the emergence of mankind. Of course, the planet is much older than that, but that part of the past is studied by palaeontologists.
The first human (for what we know nowadays) walked on the earth about 4 million years ago, in East-Africa. Modern man, being the individuals after the Neanderthal people arrived first 35,000 years ago. And first after the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago, the development really started to catch on.
We in the Netherlands, let prehistory end around the year 0. That is the time, the Romans entered our countries and with that fact we roughly let the historic era start.
In countries further north, like Denmark or Latvia (to mention just a couple) prehistory lasted about until the advent if Christianity, around about the year 1.000. And again in America and Australia, one lets prehistory end when these countries are colonised by Europeans, for example from 1492 (Columbus) onward.

De prehistorie laten we beginnen met het verschijnen van de eerste mens. Natuurlijk is de aarde enorm veel ouder, maar dat deel van het verleden wordt bestudeerd door paleontologen.
De oudste mens (wat we tot nu toe weten) liep zo'n 4 miljoen jaar geleden op aarde rond, in Oost Afrika. De moderne mens, dus na de Neanderthaler, kwam pas rond 35.000 jaar geleden. En pas na de laatste ijstijd, zo'n 10.000 jaar geleden kwam er vaart in de ontwikkeling.
De prehistorie eindigde in het jaar 0. Toen kwamen de Romeinen naar Nederland en daarmee laten we grofweg de jaartelling - en de geschiedenis - beginnen.
In landen verder naar het noorden, zoals Denemarken of Letland om er maar twee te noemen, duurde de prehistorie tot daar het eerste Christendom kwam, zo rond het jaar 1000. En in Amerika en Australië laten we de prehistorie eindigen als die landen gekoloniseerd worden door Europeanen, vanaf 1492 (Columbus) bijvoorbeeld.
