The earliest people settled in the territory of Latvia when the last ice sheet had melted and the first simple flora and fauna had developed. This happened right at the end of the Palaeolithic (8500–7600 BC). These were hunter-fishers who came from the south, following the migrating herds of reindeer. They established their settlements at the highest locations on riverbanks and lakeshores. At these sites, ancient flint weapons and tools are found. The earliest inhabitants belonged to the ancient Northern European race.

Kad tagadējās Latvijas valsts teritorijā ienāca pirmie cilvēki (LV)?
Pirmie cilvēki tagadējās Latvijas teritorijā apmetās uz dzīvi pēc tam, kad bija nokusis pēdējais apledojums un izveidojusies pirmā trūcīgā augu un dzīvnieku valsts. Tas notika paleolīta (8500.-7600.pr.Kr.) pašās beigās. Tie bija mednieki un zvejnieki, kas nākdami no dienvidiem, sekoja klejojošo ziemeļbriežu bariem. Savas apmetnes viņi ierīkoja augstākās vietās upju un ezeru krastos, kur tagad atrod seno krama ierošu un darbarīku paliekas. Pirmie iedzīvotāji piederēja senajai ziemeļeiropeīdu rasei.
