Fort Sumter (US)

Built in 1811, Fort Sumter is a Third System masonry sea fort located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The fort is best known as the site upon which the shots which started the American Civil War were fired, at the Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861.

Decades of growing strife between North and South erupted in civil war on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal fort in Charleston Harbor. Fort Sumter surrendered 34 hours later. Union forces would try for nearly four years to take it back.

In 1966, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
