Beyond the Northlands: Viking Voyages and the Old Norse Sagas - An Evening with Eleanor Rosamund Baraclough

Event date:
Friday, 28 July, 2017
Kind of Event:
for Public

We are delighted to herald this year's Dark Ages Weekend with a Friday night event around an open fire in the Earthouse with special guest, Eleanor Rosamund Baraclough, author of 'Beyond the Northlands'.

Eleanor will recount her exploration of the Norse Sagas and the far- northern world that produced them as she followed in the footsteps of the Vikings. Over the course of the evening she will elaborate on her far-flung adventures: bumping along on the back of an Icelandic horse whilst exploring Norse ruins in Greenland, sailing ice fjords under the midnight sun with a caribou hunter, and searching for Norse runes tones in Sweden. Her proudest moment came when travelling across Arctic Norway, where she was knighted with a walrus Penis bone in Hammerfest and became a member of the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society. Her experiences and the fascinating artefacts she discovered - archaeological finds, runes tones, medieval world maps, encyclopaedic manuscripts, and texts from as far away as Byzantine and Baghdad - to illuminate the medieval Nordic world and their rich storytelling culture.

Eleanor is a young, sparky author, Lecturer in Medieval History and Literature at Durham University and a regular on BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4, writtren articles for the Telegraph and The Indepenndent; and consultant on series for the BBC's Drama and Documentary departments.
