The first experimental archaeology conference in Africa, for African archaeologists and Africanists from all around the world will take place in March 2018 in Johannesburg. EXARC is proud co-organiser. The three-day conference is packed with presentations and workshops as well as an excursion. We have tried to keep the costs low (1500 Rand is about 105 EUR), and funding is available to attend this conference, mainly for people from the African mainland. Registration is now open and so is the Call for Papers.

Nike - the Game and the Victory (Bulgaria)
Nike - the Game and the Victory (Bulgaria)

Mid-August, one of our EXARC Members organised a large festival at the archaeological park Nicopolis ad Istrum in Bulgaria. This second edition included 120 reenactors and craftspeople from Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Macedonia. The event was themed with the late Antiquities at the backdrop of the Romano-Costobocian & Romano-Gothic wars as well as early Christianity. It did not only show military aspects, but also a ritual to Jupiter, Antique fashion and attention for Ulfilas who translated the Bible from Greek into the Gothic language and devised the Gothic alphabet.
This is just one of the 250 or so events EXARC presented on our online calendar and in our social media. Please contact us if you have more events we can publicise at

EXARC Journal 2017-3 published

We have only just published this year's third EXARC Journal. It contains 13 articles, of which four are peer-reviewed (all Experimental Archaeology). We discuss  20 years of experimental archaeology in Torun, Poland but also  outreach in Spain and the  Olympic long jump in experiment. Of course, we also review several books and conferences: Russia, the Netherlands, Germany and South Africa. It is well worth a read, all open access.
