2017 April - Tenth Experimental Archaeology Conference EAC10, Leiden (NL) - Information for participants

Dear conference delegates,

Thank you for registering for the International Experimental Archaeology Conference, EAC10. Below you will find some condensed information.

Travelling by train is not so hard in the Netherlands. We have ticket machines at every station and they speak English. They use coins or most European type debit cards. At the airport, you can also buy your ticket at the ticket window but that is slightly more expensive. In most busses in Leiden you can pay cash, preferably coins.

If you arrive already on Wednesday, you may like to pick up some information like a map of town at the Tourist Agency, Stationsweg 26, about 3 minutes walk from the station. More information:

For car drivers: if you want to go into town (Wednesday for the get together, Thursday for the wine reception at the City Hall), you best drive to the Parking Area at the Haagweg 8, 2311 AA Leiden and take a free mini bus from there into town:

Wednesday evening, 19 April, from 19:00h onward, we will meet for an informal get together at de Waag, right at the heart of Leiden (Aalmarkt 21). If you like to eat, it is good to reserve ahead of time:, kitchen closes at 22:00h.

Thursday morning, 20 April, registration opens at 8:00h. Please note that the conference venue (Faculty of Archaeology, Einsteinweg 3) is a 20-minute walk from the station, not in the city centre, but towards the ‘sea side’. On Thursday morning, 7:45h, a group of participants will meet outside the IBIS hotel at the Station Square and walk to the Faculty of Archaeology. On Friday we will do the same, at 8:15h.

We need some social media agents who can tweet and Facebook about the conference. Wi-Fi accounts for these volunteers are limited, so please apply early. There is no generic guest Wi-Fi. Alternatively, please use your eduroam log in details if you have them. Our hashtag is #EAC10 – we also have photos et cetera of most presentations which we share with our social media people ;-).

There will be a Whatsapp group during the conference. Please contact (+31) 640.263.273 to be included.

On Thursday late afternoon, there is a wine reception at the Leiden City Hall hosted by the mayor of Leiden. Because it is a 40-minute walk, we decided to rent a bus to bring all of you there in time. Costs are not included in the registration fee but we would be very happy if each of you could make a small donation towards the costs of this. We will ask for this in the bus.

Thursday night diner is at own expense. We suggest Holle Bolle Gijs because the prices are good and they have 80 seats. You need to reserve in advance through Other good restaurant areas are Noordeinde (with about 10 small and good restaurants), Steenstraat / Nieuwe Beestenmarkt (towards the Station) and the Lange Mare. In most cases you will need to reserve a table. Check for example

Presenters of both posters and papers will be offered the chance to publish an article in the EXARC Journal. The online version is visited about 100,000 times annually. More under Presenters will be contacted shortly after the conference.

For those going on the excursion trip on Saturday, please meet at the bus stop at the Central Station and be in time! The bus leaves at 8:30h sharp. If you booked and decided not to go, let us know at the EXARC stand on Thursday or Friday so we can find a replacement.

If you have time after the conference and stay a little longer in the Netherlands, we suggest you visit:
- The National Museum of Antiquities, Leiden:
(and the coffee bar right behind it:
- The National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden:
- The Bulbflower Parade: on Sunday April 23 beautiful parade floats will be on display in Haarlem (
