The Twentieth Legion was founded in 1991 to recreate the soldiers and world of the Roman Army for public demonstrations and living history displays. Our weapons, armour, and accoutrements are all carefully researched, and constructed at our own expense.
Our recreated Twentieth Legion usually portrays the legionaries based in Britain in the mid-first century AD, but auxiliary troops or legionaries from other eras may also be represented. Our civilian contingent displays daily life in the ancient Roman world. Our clothing and equipment are based on contemporary illustrations and descriptions as well as on archaeological evidence.
The Twentieth Legion performs at various historical programs, Latin and educational events, and encampments. Our troops demonstrate the tactics of the day and the use of the legionary's various weapons. Our civilians demonstrate and discuss the life, times and politics of Rome, and many other aspects of classical life, both military and civilian.
All our activities are geared to public education using our best efforts with the latest research, and are continually updated as new research is available. We present to students and the public, at museums and at Latin and history conventions.
