In the province of Drenthe, archaeological research has been conducted for over 100 years into the places where people used to live, the settlements. When we study these settlements, it is clear that people shared customs, for example how to build a house or place pottery in the ground as a ritual. Yet again and again it turns out that they did not always do everything exactly the same. Traditionally, the emphasis of research has often only been on the shared aspects, the norms. But what if we also looked at what people did differently in the past? Wouldn't we then learn more about the prehistoric inhabitants of Drenthe?

Karen de Vries uses three lectures on house-building traditions, the handling of waste and ritual deposition of pottery to explain how the late prehistoric inhabitants of Drenthe were able to show through material culture how they belonged to large communities, but at the same time also expressed the importance of belonging to one's own household, village community or region. Karen has explored these topics in her recently completed PhD research.

This series is organized in collaboration with the Drenthe Prehistoric Society, the Scientific Fund of the Drenthe Prehistoric Society, the Province of Drenthe and the Hunebedcentrum.
