Who are the contributors?

First of all it is interesting to see who the participants in the discussion of the archaeological experiment are. Certainly, the articles I have selected and read are only representative of a fraction of the contributions, but it is clear that it is primarily those who work with experimental archaeology in their research. Participants from outside this group are rare. This is regrettable as the archaeological experiment is an important method in archaeological research in general.

The village Nykøbing, south of Copenhagen, celebrated its 700th anniversary in 1989. At the sea passage between the islands Lolland and Falster, just outside the city, a medieval trebuchet was constructed. This was a great success – the local museum must have been very happy with 15,000 visitors in just 3 weeks time. Two years later, another similar event also attracted many tourists – a good sign that an archaeological open-air museum would be on its place here.

Between the Hjermind Forrest and the River Gudenå at Kællinghøl. You will find a historical centre which consists of a reconstructed Iron Age like longhouse (6th century AD, built in 2002), an oven house, workshops and shelters. This is in the middle of a nature reserve.

In Western Jylland, you will find the Ringkøbing-Skjern Museum. It is a culture historical museum, built up as an Ecomuseum with 14 departments divided around the Ringkøbing Fjord. It is a bit of culture and a bit of nature, which is not that strange when you know that the cultural environment is an accepted environment in ‘environment education’ in Denmark.

Hvolris is an excursion site where you can find culture, nature and sculpture, plenty to see. It covers the area around a small river valley, of the Skals river. Although the oldest remains date to Stone Age, most archaeological material is Iron Age or younger.

One of the most well known structures of the late Viking Age are the round fortresses, like at Aggersborg, Fyrkat and Trelleborg, both the one in Sweden and the one in Denmark near Slagelse. Unlike its Skånske counterpart, the Slagelse Trelleborg has never been overbuilt. The ruins were still visible at excavation and the earthen rampart is now rebuilt up to its original size: 180 metres in diameter.

The archaeological faculty of the University of Århus is situated in the old mansion Moesgård. It is well located, away from the city but not too far and surrounded by a forest like park adjacent to the beach. The 18th century Manor House of Moesgård is also home to an important archaeological and ethnographic museum. The permanent exhibition presents many unique archaeological finds from prehistoric Denmark.
