My main hobbies are experimental archaeology and historical reenacting of the early Middle Ages in the territory of Kievan Rus. My experiments were based on horn and bone and stone processing, primitive woodworking, fire breeding, and primitive tooling experiments.

I am a research assistant at the German Archaeological Institute. Currently I am writing my PhD on “Ancient Near Eastern Amulets“ at Freie Universität Berlin (DE). Since several years I am giving workshops on gruitbeer and mead production at Museumsdorf Düppel.
I am focused on food and cooking, mostly in the medieval Islamic world, but with occasional investigations around the Mediterranean.

My name is Florian Messner and currently I'm writing my PhD in medieval archaeology at the University of Innsbruck. In my work I aim to thoroughly examine all extant swords from the 10th to the 15th century from the region of historical Tyrol.
