Lecture by PD Dr. Stefan Hagel (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna)

A picture of ancient life without its music is painfully incomplete: everyday life and school, sacrifices and theater, poetry and gladiatorial games, everything had its own sound. In this lecture on antiquity, Dr. Stefan Hagel goes on a search for traces and explains how music archeology tries to find this sound at least partially again based on texts, visual evidence and instrument finds.

Information about the speaker:

As a classical philologist and music archaeologist at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Stefan Hagel researches ancient music, especially the interplay between music theory and practice, the tonality and playing technique of musical instruments, as well as questions of metrics and rhythm; Stefan Hagel often presents his findings at lecture concerts. His research is characterized by the use of computer technology and mathematical methods.
