Dugout canoes are one of those enigmatic objects from the past that really encapsulates a place and time. For us here in Somerset, traversing the waterways and reed swamp across the Levels during the Iron Age is defined by these craft.
Before the invention of metal tools, hominids had utilised stone, bone and antler tools for millenia to undertake relatively complex carpentry tasks. Here in Somerset we are fortunate to have some of the best preserved Neolithic wooden archaeology in Britain, surviving in our peat bogs out on the Levels.
Sally is an archaeologist and freelance heritage educator with an MSc in Experimental Archaeology. She is also an Honorary Associate Research Fellow at Exeter University.
Having had a keen interest in traditional crafts and living history, I went on to study Experimental Archaeology at University, specialising in viking age bloomery iron smelting.
I have recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture at University College Dublin. My background is quite varied and goes from I.T. through to Graphics Arts and onto Archaeology.
Experiments on glass bead techniques used in antiquity have produced many insights into how early medieval beadmakers made their beads (Heaser, 2018). The studies mainly focused on early medieval beads found in cemeteries of the fifth and sixth centuries AD in England. Replica tools and a simple modern blow torch were used to simulate the conditions of the ancient beadmakers (See Appendix 1).
