Early Middle Ages

The idea for the „Slawenburg Raddusch” with the exhibition about archaeology in the area of lignite mining in Lower Lusatia was suggested by the Landesamt für Bodendenkmalpflege und Archäologischem Landesmuseum (BLDAM) itself.

In 1990, the middle point of Germany was being calculated – it happened to be in the area of three municipalities: Oberdorla, Niederdorla and Langula. This sounded like a good occasion to attract tourists.

In 1902, an archaeologist excavated on a plateau in Central Brittany and unearthed a well preserved village, deserving to be described in a consequent publication.

Château Thierry is a small town in Picardy. At the castle, the Virges Armes Museum is situated. At Virges Armes, a multi period experience is presented to the public, from Antiquity up to the 1940s.

The city Kalisz derives its name from a mention by Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD of the ancient Kalisii. It is known as one of the oldest Polish cities. It is believed that the first Polish rulers, the Piast dynasty had their cradle.

Murton is a small village just outside York. In the park, you will find the Yorkshire Museum of Farming. It actually has become a conglomerate of a farming museum (of course) as well as several (re) constructed settings from different periods, from Celtic scenes to WWII perspectives, all of which are used as large classrooms.

Helge SR Grønli and Eli Solgaard conducted thorough research into the Bronze Age which resulted in the novel "the shaman's Horse". From this, the idea was taken to build the Bronze Age longhouse and visualize the small community they wrote about in his novel. In 1994, Bronseplassen was the first reconstructed Bronze Age farm in Norway.

The civil association Archaia is non-profit. Its mission is to protect, rescue and document archaeological monuments. Besides that, they work on education and raising awareness regarding archaeology and heritage protection. For this purpose, they have a archaeological park at Praha 6 – Liboc.

The archaeological open-air museum in Modra – Great Moravian settlement of the Morava river middle basin is situated near Uherske Hradistě on the road running from Stare Mesto to Velehrad. It is a significant place giving us a vivid picture of one of the most important periods of our national history. The open-air museum lives its everyday life, with educational performances, programs, trial melting of metal, production of ceramics, agricultural production as well as continual archaeological research. 

Before WWII, Kaliningrad was the capital of Prussia and was referred to as Königsberg. In 1909, at the initiative of the provincial Conservator of Historical Monuments Richard Dethlefsen an open-air museum was founded in the North-Eastern part of the Königsberger Zoo in Hufen just outside the city centre, called the Ostpreußisches Heimatmuseum.
