Winter Count, (started 1995), is part of a family of gatherings that strive to reconnect people with old ways of making fire, tanning hides, forming metal, weaving baskets, hunting, gathering and much more. We teach ancestral skills that were essential to the survival and well being of all cultures, no matter what continent your ancestors came from.

This article gives a brief history of the context of the Book of Kells before summarising recent research into its material makeup. It then goes on to introduce a possible site of production that has been excavated in the Scottish Highlands, before introducing a project to recreate a folio from the manuscript as an experimental archaeology project.

Another main focus on this day is fire. Here fire is made with flint, like thousands of years ago. A fiery affair not to be missed.

Local artist Sophie Buckingham will help you explore mark-making techniques using stencils, scraffito and embellishments. You will experiment with pattern and colour through the medium of kiln fired vitreous enamel on copper.
