The research team of the TEFRA program invites you to the action "Experimental Approaches to Archaeology: The Burning of the Dead" on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 April 2023 in the village of Sokaras, Heraklion, Crete.

The reconstruction of the burial fires will be combined with a guided tour of the archaeological site of Kumassa by the excavations director and professor Diamantis Panagiotopoulos.

The aim of the experiments is a holistic approach, understanding and reconstruction of combustion conditions through experimental pyrotechnology, reaching the parameters that form macroscopic, structural and chemical thermal alterations of t of skeletal remains. Animal bones, at different stages of decomposition, will be exposed to different combustion conditions (open fire, pond, closed oven) until complete bleach.
