Background information
In the Middle Ages almost all of Europe was Roman Catholic. There were people who adhered to the Jewish faith, but they were a minority. They were blamed for everything in times of adversity. In the countries around the Mediterranean Sea and in southern Spain there were contacts with people of the Islamic faith. Furthermore, there were groups of people who deviated from Roman Catholic teachings and were called heretics.

In the Middle Ages quite a few processions and roundabouts were held with the aim of averting wars, famines and disasters and thus gaining a grip on existence with the help of Saints who act as intercessors with God. This happened, among other things, on the three days before Ascension.

Today, Pentecost, the Friars Minor will take you in procession to bring the symbols of Pentecost, fire and water , to the Burgesses in Gravendam. This in the absence of a church in Gravendam. It is not completely authentic, but it fits in with the medieval spirit of the Friars Minor: offering people guidelines to help them live their faith. Examples are: the nativity scene, Christmas carols, Jesus on the cross with images of Mary and John.
