Guided tour by Prof. Dr. phil. Paul Meinrad Strässle in the Icon Museum Lenzburg.
Small groups of max. 7 people, from 2 pm to 4 pm.
Meinrad Strässle will take the participants in a special two-hour tour using selected Russian icons from the 14th to 18th centuries to familiarize them with the Eastern Church's understanding of images - also in comparison with the Western sacred image. Together we recognize and understand the structures and elements of the cult images. We deal with topics of the carrier material, the production technique, the painting technique and the colors, the forms of expression and perspectives, the light and the types of images, as well as questions of the forms of representation and usage of icons.
We become aware of the mysterious nature of the icon, its role and meaning in the Orthodox world of faith, past and present. We discover the historical, the philosophical-theological and the symbolic backgrounds of icon painting, understood as liturgy and craft.
In the age of unifying ecumenism and dialogue, we Westerners want to understand the language of Eastern Church symbolism better. And we do this best with the help of the icons.
