From animal remains to archaeological pieces (Structure and composition of archaeological skin, main transformation processes, nature of archaeological leather, principle of study of a collection)

by Véronique MONTEMBAULT IN / EX Situ - Doctor of Archeology - Associate researcher at UMR 7041 (Arcan)

Damp sites are favorable to the conservation of organic materials including leather. But does what archaeologists, restorers and collection managers call 'leather' really correspond to the nature of the archaeological material?

Knowing what a fresh hide is, how it is worked, makes it possible to better understand the archaeological material and to deal with it as soon as it is discovered. With the help of several examples from the excavations at Hollogne-aux-Pierres, two of the main elements of the study of a collection will then be presented: the inventory and the construction of the typology.

The lecture will take place at the Préhistomuseum and will all begin at 8:00 p.m.
No obligation to be a member of the Researchers of Wallonia to attend!

The conferences take place in the large auditorium "Researchers of Wallonia".
Address: 128, rue de la Grotte – 4400 Flémalle – Liège – Belgium
