Introduction

This experimental project aimed to reproduce the Hellenistic (fourth-third century BC) Greek pottery production process. The project was conducted by the authors, Francesca Tomei, PhD graduate in Archaeology at the University of Liverpool, and Juan Ignacio Jimenez Rivero, a ceramist specializing in replicating ancient pottery technology, who frequently collaborates with the Department of Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology and Egyptology, University of Manchester, on ceramic experimental archaeology projects and activities.

Forging knives, making paints or making finger loop bracelets: the Romans and the monasteries in the Middle Ages created many things by hand. On the handicraft course on the Vindonissa Legionnaires' Path and Königsfelden Monastery grounds, young and old can watch the professionals at work in seven workshops, try out old handicrafts for themselves and take little memories home with them.

On Saturday September 9th, participants will learn pottery in the Roman Villa Borg from the master ceramist Lyn Riccardo in a course in construction technique. Already in Roman times there were pottery kilns for the production of everyday ceramics. In addition to vessels, roof tiles were also made in such potteries.
