We invite you to the International scientific and practical seminar entitled "Ancient shipping and shipbuilding: issues of research, reconstruction and the possibility of use for the development of tourism".
Location: Historical Reconstruction Park "Ostvytsia", Ukraine Rivne, Marusi Churai Street, 33017.
Topics of the seminar:
• Ancient shipbuilding
• Ancient shipping
• Problems of the methodology of archaeological research of ancient water vehicles
• Experimental archaeology in the study of ancient shipping
• Issues of reconstruction and restoration of ancient water vehicles
Organized with the assistance of the EXARC association (Netherlands) and with the support of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Rivne State Regional Government.
If you cannot attend in person but want to help support maritime experimental archaeology and the open-air museum sector in Ukraine then join us online.
This conference is the result of an initiative spearheaded by SUN (#supportukrainenetwork), a collaborative endeavour between the York Experimental Archaeology Research (YEAR) Centre, EXARC and Ukrainian heritage professionals, represented by Yarema Ivantsiv (on facebook: Ярема Іванців). An initial meeting back in June gathered interested partners in Ukraine, with museums, living history groups and independent researchers giving short presentations of their work and uncovering potential areas for collaboration and development.
The outcome of that first meeting was clear - Ukrainian open-air museums and other organisations are firmly committed to developing and strengthening their cultural heritage sector and see great potential in the field of maritime experimental archaeology. And despite the obvious and overwhelming challenges of the war - for example, one of the museums involved currently has no archaeology fieldwork unit as the majority of its staff are serving at the front - this network is determined to succeed.
As one of the organisers said, "When victory comes and tourists return, we want to be ready". This conference is an important step in that process.
