In the Viking Age, bone and antler carvers were skilled craftsmen who made everyday objects as well as richly decorated things for upscale needs. Combs, needles, spindle whorls, knife handles, game pieces, flutes and small containers were made in their workshops. As raw material they used red deer and reindeer antlers, moose shovels, but also bones from swans, wild and domestic animals. A particularly sought-after material was walrus ivory from northern Norway.

Antler carver Nils Wolpert is a guest at the Viking houses in Haithabu this weekend. He has moved into the comb maker's workshop and lets visitors watch his fingers.
