The study of hunting tools in prehistory is key to the archaeological research. Spears, thrusters, and other devices appear at different times, but using the bow, which has been documented since the Upper Paleolithic, represents a revolutionary technological achievement. Throughout prehistory, bows and arrows have been present with variations in the raw materials used, the
processing techniques, the morphology and uses. Despite being a recurrent aspect in archaeological research, conceptions about the use of bows have often been biased. Experimental approaches have been crucial to understanding technology and the everyday life of past societies, correcting these biases.
This seminar aims to understand the basic processes of obtaining materials, as well as their transformation and use. It includes online presentations and experimental activities to make bows, strings and arrows, with expert teachers in archaeology and prehistory.
