On Sunday, March 6th, the 2022 season begins in the Lauresham Experimental Archaeological Open-Air Laboratory. As in previous years, the team led by Laboratory Manager Claus Kropp invites you to the Open Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission. The motto is: "To be a lord in the early Middle Ages". A large number of hands-on offers shows how the upper class lived on a manor house in the Carolingian period around 1200 years ago. The open-air laboratory, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Kloster Lorsch, is an example of such an example.
On this day, visitors of all ages can find out, among other things, what everyday life was like for the nobility around the year 800, which status symbols were used to identify ladies and gentlemen and the importance of hunting.
At various stations throughout the site, you can find out and try out how woodturning, shooting with a bow, striking coins and how textiles are made. The smithy shows how weapons were made in the early Middle Ages and how the scale armor of an armored rider was made.
The culinary offer includes Odenwald game specialties as well as vegetarian delicacies of the region.
Admission to the premises of the open-air laboratory takes place according to the rules of the 2G plus regulations. The exact explanations can be found at www.kloster-lorsch.de under the "Corona Notes" button. The obligation to wear mouth and nose protection exists outdoors only in crowded situations, but always inside buildings.
