Help out on the farm! May 25 and 26, 2024 are the national Canon Days. Dolmens and their makers, the dolmen builders, are one of the windows into the Canon network.

The life of a dolmen builder was intensive. They were the first farmers in Drenthe and farming life was completely different at the time than it is today. It was hard work to build up a good supply of food for the winter. All help is welcome... That's why you can contribute your bit to the farm in 3000 BC during the Canon Days. Dive into the lives of the first farmers in Drenthe and help with their daily activities. Our ancient people are eagerly awaiting your help, so you can help grind grain, twine flax, and learn to make fire!

Saturday - Making rope with plant fibers

You can get beautiful fibers from different plants and trees that can be used to make rope or clothing. Think of the bark of the willow and lime tree, or the fibers of the nettle or flax plant.

On Saturday you can see how the fibers are extracted and how they are converted into rope. You can also make your own rope! A process we call twisting.

Sunday - Making walls from clay

The walls of the prehistoric farms are made of wickerwork of willow, topped with a mixture of boulder clay and straw. An ancient way of building houses that is becoming increasingly popular today.

The walls sometimes need updating. On Sunday you can help our prehistoric people mix clay and renovate the Stone Age house! Make sure you wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty... it's a lot of messy work. You can wash your hands and feet here, but you won't stay completely clean.
