About the lecture

Ancient man viewed the unsettled natural landscape as the home of gods. If he penetrates into such a region, he means that he owes the gods a plea for forgiveness and permission. This also applies to the high mountains; and as dangerous as it was for the traveler at that time, there is also a second request for forbearance: namely, the request for divine escort on the way.

The places where people made these requests were primarily high altitude sanctuaries, which can be found in the Alps at an altitude of over 3000 m. There they prayed for an undamaged crossing, vows were made for it and sacrifices were made to the mountain gods. The lecture reports on the fascinating history of the discovery of these high alpine sanctuaries and summarizes what we know about them.
