The Saalburg as an extracurricular learning location

As an archaeological open-air museum, the Saalburg Roman fort near Bad Homburg has long been a popular destination for school trips. The reconstructed fort with its staged exhibition areas offers extraordinary possibilities for a vivid cultural mediation. The core theme of the mediation is life on the Limes around 1800 years ago, the organization of the Roman military system and the civilizational achievements associated with it. Practically all areas of life are represented in the extensive archaeological collections of the museum and thus offer points of contact with numerous topics such as everyday culture, nutrition, clothing, monetary affairs, medicine and hygiene, coinage, religion, etc.

As part of a 90-minute tour through the fort, the Saalburg museum education team offers teachers the opportunity to get an overview of the existing buildings and exhibition areas and to learn how they can be used. Practical tips and suggestions are also given, which can be helpful for planning a successful excursion.

The event is also intended to give teachers the opportunity to exchange ideas with the Saalburg's museum education team in order to be able to develop future offers of the museum in a targeted manner. Therefore, questions and comments on the part of the participants are expressly welcome.
