Conference: In the Middle - Recreating the Middle Ages in Popular Culture

Highlighting the continuous dialogue between the Middle Ages and the post-medieval world, In the Middle is an international interdisciplinary conference that seeks to explore the ways, methods and motivations in which the medieval period has been imagined, evoked, re-lived, and refashioned in contemporary popular culture.

Hosted by the Institute for Medieval Studies (IEM-NOVA FCSH), the conference will take place in Lisbon, at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, on November 21-22, 2019.

Topics on Medievalism and popular culture for individual papers might include the following:

    • Medievalism in the arts
    • Contemporary literature in the Middle Ages
    • Medieval representations in festivals and fairs
    • Use of Middle Ages in film and television
    • Medievalism and contemporary music
    • Medieval imagery in the gaming industry and community

The conference will end with a round table on "Reconstructing the Middle Ages: writing in the middle (between History and fiction)"

The deadline for all abstracts is September 1st, 2019 (notifications will be sent until September 13th). Papers and proposals may be presented in English, Portuguese or Spanish.

Registration fee of 10€ for speakers.
