Metal finds from the early Middle Ages are artistically decorated with stylized animals. You will get to know the techniques and motifs in demonstrations and hands-on activities.
Belt buckles, pieces of jewelery and swords from the early Middle Ages are richly decorated. Fantastic animal motifs and mythical creatures made of silver and brass were skillfully embedded in the work pieces. Experimental archaeologist Markus Binggeli introduces the metal craft of damascening and shows how the metal decorations are created. If you like, you can reproduce the technique yourself with silver wire and modeling clay or print a fabric bag with mythical creatures from the early Middle Ages.
