In search of the earliest agricultural animals in the Netherlands

The transition from hunting/gathering to farming about 6000 years ago marked a turning point in the way of human existence. It also marked a change in the relationship between humans and animals: from prey to livestock. In the Netherlands, however, little is known about when and how people switched from hunting animals to keeping them. Research into stable isotopes in animal bones provides new insights into this. In this lecture new research is presented on pigs and cattle from the Swifterbant culture. It is discussed how the diet and living environment of animals provide insight into the transition from hunting to agriculture and about the changing relationship between humans and animals.
