How was Araisi lake fortress built (LV)?

Āraiši lake fortress was built on a low, frequently inundated islet in the lake, connected to the shore by means of an 80-metre-long natural bank of glacial till. In the 9th century, when the lake fortress was built, the water level in Lake Āraiši was about 1.5–2 m lower than it is today. First, a rectangular foundation lattice of stout logs was created on the island, which was then covered with a spread of thinner logs. This foundation platform raised the structure about a metre above the water, protecting it from fluctuations in the water level and aiding drainage. The houses and outbuildings of the lake fortress were built close together in four rows along the perimeter of the platform, with an additional row along the middle. The complex of buildings was surrounded with fortifications. A pathway built on the stony bank connected the settlement with the shore.
