Ekestad is just outside Kristianstad in Northeast Skåne. The area is rich with archaeological sites: in the water kingdom around the river Helge there used to be many Viking villages. In the year 1026, this was the area of the Three King’s Battle, when the Danish King Knud fought the Swedish Anund Jakob and the Norwegian King Olav the Saint.

The spring of 1975 a group of secondary school students found a silver treasure from 900 A.D., on a pasture nearby the bay of Bandelunda in Burs pastoral. According to the legend a powerful Viking chief "Stavar the Great" were to have lived here on this place called Stavgard. During the Viking era Stavgard had a large harbour. Excavations from the 1950's and 80's show evidence of intense trade in this well hidden harbour.

Hornbore by (Hornbore Village) was founded in 1997 and consists of a historically inspired visitor centre with reconstructed Viking houses as an attempt to recreate a smaller trading site from the Viking Age. Although a trading area has not been found here (yet), the geographic location is perfect for it, the water and a cemetery of the period nearby.
