Walking through some of the most glorious parts of Cranborne Chase, we will learn how to harvest wild plants for food and other uses.

Join Kael on a beginner’s guide to foraging for wild food course. Kael is a tutor at the Ancient Technology Centre and is an expert on the historical use of food and regularly forages for his own consumption.

Starting at 10:30 and finishing at 14:30 

Discover daily life in an Iron Age hill fort through role play and activities including cooking, building, face painting and basketry. Learn about the religion, warfare and social structure of Celtic people.

Is your family up to the challenge of our Family Warrior Camp? 

This will be the third year of our Family Warrior Camps, back by popular demand! This exclusive opportunity to stay overnight at Butser Ancient Farm, whilst learning ancient survival skills and bonding as a family, is not to be missed! 

We are delighted to be hosting an evening of stargazing on Friday 17th April. Doors open at 7.30pm, when visitors can buy hot and cold drinks in our visitor centre, and at 8pm Dave Woods from HantsAstro will give a short introduction to the night sky.

This February half term explore ancient worlds at Butser Ancient Farm. Each weekday step back in time and learn ancient skills with a hands on demonstration, take part in a themed trail around the ancient buildings and warm yourself with a hot chocolate from our shop around a roaring fire.

At historical sites and in the presence of historical objects, the only dimension which separates us from the the stories and the people connected with them is the 4th Dimension, Time. Live interpretation is arguably the best way of bridging that dimensional distance. We talk about ‘Bringing the Past To Life’ or ‘Going back in Time’. Visitors often cite ‘time travel’ as a motive for visiting.

Discover how our ancestors made tools out of stones in the ground with flint knapper and author Bob Turner. Learn to understand flint as a material and how to knap and work it to make ancient tools. Discover the talents and skills of ancient Britons and go home with a flint tool you have made yourself!

CAST A BRONZE AGE AXE, KNIFE, OR CELTIC TORC!

Learn how to change flax to linen using traditional techniques. You’ll learn to be a ‘scutcher’ or a ‘breaker’ and change the plant fibre into a simple string. You’ll also have a chance to spin flax on a drop spindle and to learn some simple weaving techniques.
