Support Ukraine Network Website

On March 9th we had our first online discussion on 2024 with the Support Ukraine Network (SUN). During the meeting, colleagues from Ukraine shared their open-air museums, and discussed their experiences with managing and maintaining these institutions. Examples include the Kamianets-Podilskyi Historical Museum-Reserve, the Dami Halic Reserve, and the Trakhtemyriv reserve. Discussions and presentations also included themes such as working with children, the use of virtual reality, applying for UNESCO World Heritage status, and how to deal with financial difficulties.

Open-air archaeological museums are one of the promising directions in museum activities in Ukraine that is rapidly developing. Their main feature is the interactive nature of the exposition, which allows engaging visitors in the historical atmosphere of a certain period. One might use a non-scientific comparison as a portal in time and space...

SUN: Live discussion on open-air museums

The Support Ukraine Network (SUN) was founded back in 2022 as an initiative between the YEAR Centre (York Experimental Archaeological Research, UK), EXARC, and Ukraine-based ancient craft expert and EXARC member Yarema Ivantsiv. The aim of the initiative is to provide a network linking researchers and cultural heritage professionals in Ukraine with those in other countries, in order to provide mentorship and resources for open-air museums, experimental archaeologists, live interpreters, and ancient craft experts. SUN will soon have its own website, but for now you can find more information through the link below.

Director’s Meeting, Ukraine and Abroad

On the Saturday before Midsummer, a first online meeting was held between directors of open-air museums and archaeological reserves in Ukraine and abroad. Three Ukrainian organisations were represented as well as three foreign ones. This meeting was part of the #SUN initiative. We discussed current management topics and challenges all museums face institutions at the various stages of creation. We plan to continue with these meetings, including more directors. Ukraine and Historical Ships: a First Meeting

As part of the #SUN initiative (Support Ukraine Network) we are creating a network of Ukrainian historical and cultural reserves, archaeologists, representatives of traditional crafts, reconstructors and at the same time joining it to the global network. Goal: information support, exchange of experience, generating joint projects, preservation of cultural heritage. As part of the project, there was an online meeting about ship building. It is very inspiring to see the websites, Facebook and Instagram profiles of the various museums and centres and to see how much they still accomplish, despite the difficult circumstances of the war. It was really interesting to see what kinds of boats/projects people are working with, both archaeological finds and reconstructions. There are quite a few Ukraine sites that work with the same kind of subject matter and approach that people in other parts of Europe do...

Ukraine delegation visits EXARC conference

Conferences are meant for networking. Online participation is good, presenting is better, and being present in person is best. For our Ukraine colleagues, contacts with museums and experimental archaeologists are an important part of keeping up their cultural work which is part of their identity. This, as they say, is equally important to having electricity, water and shelter.  The #SUN network is a group of people trying to support Ukraine in these matters. We were lucky that the EXARC conference this year was planned to take place in Toruń, Poland, where 60 people from all around the world convened...

#EAC13: Support our special guests from Ukraine

EXARCs largest event of the year will be in Poland in May: the #EAC13 international conference on experimental archaeology.

And we will have some very special guests! A delegation from Ukraine will join us for a live dialogue on how to strengthen the experimental archaeology cooperation between Ukraine and the rest of the world. Keeping culture alive, and keeping the network going is essential. Please support the network we build up with Ukraine colleagues.
