Celebrate Archaeology in Europe 14 – 16 June 2019

EXARC is excited to be part of the first European Archaeology Days, coordinated by INRAP (FR), taking place 14 – 16 June 2019. Where in previous years this event was a France-only event, it will now for the first time be expanded to include at least nine countries in Europe.

The National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) is the largest organisation in France concerning archaeology. They excavate nearly 2,000 archaeological sites annually. In 2018, the ninth annual French national archaeology days took place, with 1,600 events all over the country attracting over 200,000 visitors.

In June 2019, the European Archaeology Days will consist of a long weekend dedicated to archaeology in all its forms These three days will be used to raise awareness and familiarise European audiences with all aspects of archaeology.
A range of original and festive events will be organised, to allow families, schools, students, history enthusiasts, museum visitors or the merely curious to discover this multifaceted discipline and their archaeological heritage.
Visits to places that are not normally open to the public, meetings with archaeological professionals, who will be describing their profession to the public, along with a range of entertaining and educational activities are just some of the wide variety of programmes available at the European Archaeology Days.
Archaeological open-air museums, EXARC members, will have their events this weekend themed with the European Archaeology days and by adding them to the European website, will reach a larger audience than ever before. Many EXARC individual members, freelancers, will perform this weekend in museums and at festivals throughout Europe.

Join the European Archaeology Days with your event

The coordinator of the European Archaeology Days, INRAP, supports all organisations who would like to join in these three days. Ideas of activities will be shared, there will be a European website for all events (in your own language), customizable posters, flyers and digital media are made available and those participating in the event will be identified by a specific label.
IMPORTANT: organisations wishing to participate need to sign up at http://journees-archeologie.fr between February and April 2019 and publish their programme in their own language.
EXARC will assist its members to include their program for the European Archaeology days both on the European website and on the EXARC Calendar: https://exarc.net/events

Sharing archaeological heritage throughout Europe aids social cohesion while at the same time preserving the cultural identity of all. Thus, these European Archaeology Days can contribute to the development of a common identity, while preserving the cultural diversity that characterises a Europe of multiplicity.
