South Africa. Archaeological? Yes. Open-air? Yes. Museum? Yes. EXARC? Not yet.

In its quest for archaeological open-air museums across the world, EXARC received assistance from ICOM, the International Museum Federation with over 30,000 members worldwide. The South African National Committee told us, there are a respectable number of 80 open-air museums in South Africa, some of which have reconstructed buildings, based on archaeology. We would love listing those on our map of archaeological open-air museums at We are well aware that those museums are different from European or US examples, but wouldn’t it be boring if we’d all be alike?

We have sent all these museums a letter and some information material of EXARC – now we wait for answers! Let us know if we can list your museum, wherever you are.
